Samantha Gregmar is a Swedish-American multidisciplinary freelance artist who has lived in the UK since 2003. Living and experiencing the art scene in London for two years, followed by two years in Brighton, Samantha relocated back to East Yorkshire in September 2021. Keen to evoke emotion through energetic yet ethereal mark making, the artwork is usually balanced somewhere between expressionism and surrealism. After graduating in 2014, Samantha had a 6 year hiatus from creating, feeling lost and depleted after creating artwork heavily influenced by her tutors, rather than herself.
Recent body of work since her return has explored the expression of hands, texture, emotions and the divine feminine. Her work has shifted through different phases since, ranging from quite figurative works to exploring the abstract. One topic she returns to often is exploring the feminine body and the theme of identity.
The past couple of years has seen Samantha pondering on her practice and investigating a shift in a new direction: a re-examination of what she wants to convey in her art.
Samantha’s current body of work focuses on taking a moment to notice the in-between, all the things we do not see, and raising the question if it is a case of not being able to see them, or simply not wanting to?
In a very busy world that never stops, it can be hard to stay present and notice the small things. Those are the things I want to bring to light in this collection. The appreciation for what is all around us, if we actively make the choice to notice, and see that we are part of something bigger and innate, something often forgotten in this day and age... The poetry of being alive.
With a previous 10 years of experience in customer facing service in hospitality (four of those years being in management), team leading and working within a group come naturally to her. Samantha’s keen to help people where she can, with previous volunteer experience growing food for local food banks throughout the pandemic. Creating, in whatever format it may be in, can be very healing - Samantha believes that everybody should be allowed the space to explore their inner artist in this nurturing and playful space.
